WHAT IS GYNECOMASTIA?
The over development of men breasts is called Gynecomastia. Gynecomastia or man boobs is a problem of enlarged breasts in men. This problem is caused by diet, obesity, aging, drugs or some medical problems and it can occur in babies, teens and older men. It may affect only one breast or both. Gynecomastia is characterized by:
- Excessive fat may be present.
- presence of glands or breast tissue.
- one or both sides may be effected.
- loose breast skin in long standing cases.

Gynecomastia surgery is a procedure to remove excess fat, glandular tissue and/or skin from overdeveloped or enlarged male breasts. In severe cases of gynecomastia, the weight of excess breast tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple). In these cases, the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved and excess skin may need to be reduced. Gynecomastia may result from hormonal changes, heredity, disease, or the use of certain drugs, and can present unilaterally (one breast) or bilaterally (both breasts).
There are a variety of different techniques used by Dr. Ahsan Riaz to treat gynecomastia. Gynecomastia surgery can be combined with other forms of body contouring surgery, including liposuction, or performed at the same time with other elective surgeries.
GYNECOMASTIA TREATMENT
The surgical correction of male breast reduction (gynaecomastia) may be performed by following procedures.
- Excision
- Liposuction
- Combination of liposuction and excision
If excess glandular tissue is the primary cause of the breast enlargement, it will be excised, or cut out, with a scalpel. The excision may be performed alone or in conjunction with liposuction. Working through the incision, the surgeon cuts away the excess glandular tissue, fat and skin from around the areola and from the sides and bottom of the breast. Major reductions that involve the removal of a significant amount of tissue and skin may require larger incisions that result in more conspicuous scars. If liposuction is used to remove excess fat, the cannula is usually inserted through the existing incisions. Patients may feel a vibration or some friction during the procedure, but generally no pain. The procedure generally takes about 1 to 2 hours, depending on how much breast tissue and/or skin needs to be addressed.
WHERE YOUR SURGERY WILL BE PERFORMED?
Gynecomastia surgery is most often performed as an outpatient procedure, but in extreme cases, or those where other medical conditions present cause for concern, an overnight hospital stay may be recommended. The surgery itself usually takes about an hour and a half to complete. However, more extensive procedures may take longer. Your surgery will be performed by Dr. Ahsan Riaz at his clinic located at Johar Town, Lahore, Pakistan.
TYPE OF ANESTHESIA
Whether you’ve had excision with a scalpel or Liposuction, you will feel some discomfort for a few days after gynecomastia surgery. However, discomfort can be controlled with medications prescribed. In any case, you should arrange to have someone drive you home after surgery and to help you out for a day or two if needed.
You’ll be swollen and bruised for a while, to help reduce swelling, you’ll probably be instructed to wear an elastic pressure garment continuously for a week or two, and for a few weeks longer at night. Although the worst of your swelling will dissipate in the first few weeks, it may be three months or more before the final results of your surgery are apparent.
In the meantime, it is important to begin getting back to normal. You’ll be encouraged to begin walking around on the day of surgery, and can return to work when you feel well enough, which could be as early as a day or two after surgery. Any stitches will generally be removed about 1 to 2 weeks following the procedure. Your gynecomastia surgeon, Dr. Ahsan Riaz will give you specific recovery instructions but usually you will be asked to rest for the first week. You will get proper result after 3 to 6 months.
WILL THIS PROCEDURE LEAVES SCARS?
Dr. Ahsan Riaz undergoes regular training on the most current surgical methods and will choose the incision option that will minimise scarring. These surgical incisions are made very close to the border of the nipple and should be become barely noticeable in a short time.
